Speak English like an American

We’ll introduce foreign nationals and their families to life and language in America – and, teach them how to write effective business emails and reports.

Our Core Service

America for Expats helps students appear savvy, educated and likable when they interact with Americans.

ACCULTURATION
Learn why Americans act and behave the way they do so you understand where they’re coming from, and can relax and enjoy yourself in their company.

AMERICAN ACCENT TRAINING
English intonation patterns and sounds are much different from those of most foreign languages. We’ll teach you how to drag out key vowel sounds and make “i” and “th” sounds like native speakers so Americans can really tell “where you’re coming from.”

ASK AN AMERICAN ANYTHING
Expats are typically advised to avoid topics Americans like to argue about, like sports, religion and politics. They’re also confused by issues of race and class. Our experts answer questions expats are often afraid to bring up for fear of provoking confrontation.

BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED ENGLISH CONVERSATION
Four or five sentences into a conversation, most expats feel like they’ve used up all of their English grammar and vocabulary. They feel “stupid” and exhausted from trying to carry a conversation with a native speaker. America for Expats teaches students shortcuts and linking words they need to keep going and feel at ease while navigating complex ideas.

BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED ENGLISH GRAMMAR
We try to avoid books (most students tired of these in their home countries) and stick to a regimen of fun, interactive activities, links and exercises customized for each student.

BUSINESS WRITING
Let’s face it: Students are here to advance their careers. Unfortunately, issues with subject-verb agreement, improper use of pronouns, limited vocabulary and unfamiliarity with idiomatic expressions make students sound uneducated. We fix this problem fast. In fact, our lessons begin with a quick review of emails and power points.

CONCIERGE BUSINESS SUPPORT
Students are invited to email 24/7 so we can help rewrite poorly worded emails and presentations quickly.

CONCIERGE ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT
Working with students two to three times a week isn’t always enough. America for Expats takes calls from students from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. at night. We’re to answer time-sensitive questions about doctors, schools, business emails, directions, and even shopping malls.

DAILY LIVING SKILLS
Is it okay to walk down sidewalks? Will the U.S. government want to see ID at post offices? Do bars discriminate against Asians? These are typical questions students ask us. We’ll talk them through everything from standing in line at the driver’s license office to making small talk at the coffee bar.

INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN CULTURE AND MEDIA
One of the easiest ways to learn any foreign language and behavior is to immerse yourself in popular TV and movie culture. Some of our best conversations revolve around American TV shows, where to find them online, and which Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo venue to enjoy.

ONLINE TUTORING VIA SKYPE
Most universities offer extensive online classes, and so do we! Interaction with students doesn’t stop when they return to their home countries. We stay connected and offer daily conversation and English tips via Skype. America for Expats also starts teaching students before they leave their home countries, giving them an edge and confidence that helps them transition quickly to daily American life.

Why Choose Us?

America for Expats is different from other English language services because we do much, much more than teach new arrivals the fundamentals of grammar. Our focus is helping students transition successfully – and quickly – into American life and gain confidence in their ability to communicate effectively in English.

Students are introduced to American business life using a multi-disciplinary approach that includes multi-cultural training (“ask an American anything!”) and immediate intervention on prosody and intonation, phonemic awareness, pronunciation, business writing, and conversational English skills. Once students are stabilized in their new environments, America for Expats provides traditional, textbook-based instructional support.
